With school back in session and colder months around the corner, flu season is on its way. Health experts recommend starting your protection early—ideally by getting your flu shot in September. Cases often begin to rise as early as November, so acting now can help keep you and your loved ones safe.
The flu isn’t just an inconvenience. According to the CDC, influenza claimed as many as 130,000 lives in the U.S. last year. The flu shot is your best defense, lowering the risk of serious illness, hospitalization, and even death.
By getting vaccinated, you’re not just protecting yourself—you’re also protecting your family, coworkers, and vulnerable members of the community.
Guidelines remain the same for the 2025–2026 flu season:
Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu shot.
Adults 65 and older are encouraged to ask about the high-dose vaccine, which offers stronger protection. If that isn’t available, a standard dose is still much better than skipping vaccination.
Children 6 months to 8 years old who have never had a flu shot should receive two doses, spaced four weeks apart.
Parents are encouraged to vaccinate their children by the end of October, so they’re protected before flu activity peaks.
While vaccination is key, everyday habits also help reduce the spread:
Wash hands frequently with soap and water
Use hand sanitizer when out and about
Avoid close contact with anyone who is sick
Wear a mask if you’re not feeling well, to avoid spreading illness
You can find more flu prevention tips directly from the CDC’s Healthy Habits Guide.
If you do get the flu, most people will recover at home with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter medications like Tylenol or ibuprofen (for children, avoid aspirin due to the risk of Reye’s syndrome). Seek care promptly if you:
Have difficulty breathing
Cannot keep fluids down
Experience severe fatigue or dehydration (especially in young children)
For high-risk groups—older adults, children under 2, or people with chronic health conditions—speak to a healthcare provider quickly. Antiviral treatments like Tamiflu may help if started early.
Along with getting your flu shot, it’s smart to prepare your home for flu season. Keep these items on hand:
