RSV: What Patients Should Know This Season

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is currently circulating across the U.S. and affecting many families, older adults, and individuals with ongoing respiratory conditions.

Although RSV often starts with cold-like symptoms, it can feel more intense and last longer for some people, particularly during peak respiratory season.

At T&F Pharmacies, we’re seeing more patients asking about supplements, over-the-counter treatments, breathing support, and RSV vaccines. Here’s a clear overview of what actually helps — and what to keep in mind.

Understanding RSV

RSV is a common respiratory virus that spreads easily through close contact, coughing, and sneezing. In healthy adults, symptoms are often mild and manageable at home, but RSV can place extra strain on the lungs, especially for infants, older adults, and people with asthma, COPD, or weakened immune systems.

Symptoms typically include congestion, cough, fever, fatigue, and in some cases wheezing or shortness of breath. While the virus itself must run its course, supportive care plays an important role in recovery and comfort.

Do Supplements Like Vitamin C or Zinc Help?

Many people reach for vitamin C, zinc, or immune-support supplements during RSV season. While these products are popular, it’s important to set realistic expectations.

Current evidence shows that vitamin C, zinc, and similar supplements do not prevent RSV and do not treat the virus directly. In some people, they may slightly support the immune system or help reduce the duration of general cold-like symptoms, but their effect on RSV specifically is limited.

Supplements can still have a place for individuals with nutritional gaps, but taking high doses won’t offer added protection and may cause side effects or interact with medications. A T&F pharmacist can help review what’s appropriate for you.

Managing RSV Symptoms

Because RSV is a viral infection, treatment focuses on easing symptoms and supporting breathing while the body recovers.

Over-the-counter expectorants such as Mucinex® or Robitussin® may help loosen mucus and make coughing more productive. Fever reducers and pain relievers can improve comfort when used correctly, and saline sprays or humidified air may help relieve congestion.

For patients with underlying respiratory conditions, RSV can trigger airway irritation. In these cases, inhalers or nebulizer treatments prescribed by a healthcare provider may help open the airways and reduce wheezing. These treatments don’t cure RSV, but they can make breathing easier and reduce discomfort during recovery.

RSV Vaccines: Prevention Matters

One of the most important developments in recent years is the availability of RSV vaccines in the United States.

RSV vaccines are recommended for adults aged 60 and older, particularly those with heart, lung, or immune conditions. Vaccination is also available during pregnancy to help protect newborns during their first RSV season. These vaccines work by strengthening the body’s immune response, lowering the risk of severe illness and complications.

For infants and young children at higher risk, long-acting antibody options may also be available as part of preventive care.

If you’re unsure whether vaccination is right for you or a family member, your T&F pharmacist can help answer questions and guide next steps.
